Foundation for Continuing Education
The MSCI Foundation for Continuing Education, overseen by a member-volunteer board of directors, is responsible for the institute's education and training programs. The foundation board works with the staff to ensure that the education program provides a high return on investment for members, and that training programs improve member productivity
MSCI offers four basic types of education and training programs with a focus on metals industry sales techniques, operations, product knowledge, inventory management, current metals production, and such senior management subjects as finance, leadership development, supply chain management, business strategy, and more.
Basic and intermediate training sessions, often in multi-day formats, are provided in sales, consultative selling, warehouse operations and inventory management. These sessions are usually conducted at or near MSCI's headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois . A number of these training segments have been modified for delivery in one-day sessions anywhere they may be useful; chapters often host such sessions as part of a day-long program, and MSCI member companies may request them on site.
Product knowledge for the metals industry is provided via MetalLearn™, a computer-based learning system that reviews the 10 most-requested metals sold at metals service centers, their characteristics, their grades, and the terminology associated with each. The MetalLearn system includes a student pre-test, continuing assessments, a student database, Internet interactivity, and other unique features. Students are trained at any computer with Internet access and proceed at their own pace.
Current metals production information is offered to members through mill tours and programs provided from time to time by producers. MSCI, through product divisions, usually provides one or two major tours and related seminars each year.
Senior management education is offered to MSCI members through a partnership with the Olin School of Business at Washington University , St. Louis . These sessions are held at the Olin School 's Charles F. Knight Education Center , a state-of-the-art facility, and deal with advanced business strategies, finance and financial tools, organizational development and other issues particular to the metals industry.
